The Right Fabric Choice
With so many fabrics out there to choose from it can be an overwhelming task with the vast amount of materials, textures and colours on offer. How to narrow down your choice of lots of different options will probably be your first question.
It’s important to think about colours to start with and their impact in different rooms. Warm colours such as red, orange and yellow are said to provide energy, it is, therefore, most commonly used in rooms where a lot of activity takes place, such as the kitchen or an at-home gym. Cool colours such as blue help us unwind and relax, and will suit the bedroom to help prepare the mind for rest.
There are several types of patterns to ponder over when selecting the fabric for your interiors. Floral, paisley, geometric, novelty, ethnic and stripes are just a few to choose from. When deciding on a pattern it is important that you think about the other items of furniture and the size of the room. In a larger room, a small detailed pattern could easily be lost. Stripes can add colour and create a less formal feel for a room, these patterns are also often used to give the impression of more space, opening up what may be considered as a smaller room.
Choosing a bold colour or patterned material is often a really fun way of making a feature out of your upholstery. It is important however to make sure that you will be able to live with the statement piece of upholstered furniture, making sure other furnishings in the room are kept simple and minimal. It could be as simple as adding a bold, colourful cushion to a plain sofa, which can then be easily changed as trends move on.
If you would like to create a formal style in your interiors, trusted materials such as refined sheers, satin, velvet and lace used together can help you achieve this. However, these refined materials tend to be less durable. Rougher textures such as canvas, leather, tweed or linen are better options for households with young children or animals and provide a durable earthy interior. Combining textures can create an interesting contrast of rough and smooth, which allows you to be experimental and creative. The material choice is important and has to be practical for its desired use, such as curtains, sofas, cushions. Some fabrics will not work for all of these. It will often come down to the quality of the fabric and its durability.
