In today’s blog post we wanted to talk about all things door related! Surprisingly enough door hardware can really transform the look of a door. Door handles are much more than something to consider at the end of a renovation project – door handles are an essential part of any house, offering functionality and personality to any interior. No door is complete without suitable door furniture and the choice of handles or doorknobs you make will be a subtle, yet important detail. They can act like jewellery for a room, helping tie together different design elements and aiding the natural flow through the property, from area to area.

While they may be a physically small item, the style you choose needs to sit well within the overall design scheme. Plus, the hardware needs to be fit for purpose, long-lasting and suitable for carrying out an important function day-to-day.

Textures like hammered and imprinted finishes make a notable statement whilst blending in with the overall design but hardware can also be a great way to tie together even the smallest details of your room. Incorporating other materials is a good way to do this – for example, leather-wrapped handles are perfect for exuding a masculine or country appeal and glass or embellished designs offer something a little more glamorous.

As the environmental concerns peak for millions around the world, sustainability is at the core of many door hardware designs of 2020. From wooden knobs to biophilic finishes such as brass, copper, or leather, door hardware with a nod to the love of nature. Likewise, muted and earthy colours, natural as well as recycled materials, are increasingly more popular choices for door hardware. If you’re using doorknobs on your main doors, then you may decide to use a common style throughout and across all door fittings - or at least to choose something complementary. Alternatively, you may prefer to create a contrast, using handles that make a statement and stand out. It is increasingly popular to use standard doors of wardrobes with the same lever or knob that is used throughout the property.

There are lots of options when it comes to size, type and design, and you’ll want to find the style that is going to complement your property the most. During our projects, we find it helpful to start by viewing the project as a whole and thinking where it may be most appropriate to use the same style of door and handle. we also plan where our clients may want something a little different, but still in a matching style and whether there are any areas where a bespoke, statement handle may be needed.

In the project pictured we incorporated a Philip Watts door hardware design. The textured metal works so well with the glass door and becomes a real focal point to the room. It is a sleek and elegant well thought out design. It compliments the different textures in the light installation and the tone of the metal complements the colour scheme of the room.
