Textured Upholstery

Here at Modern and Classic we love going through our sample books for inspiration and ideas, we have been especially enjoying looking at textured fabrics. They can be so versatile and can transform any upholstery. A particular stand out collection would be the Callisto collection from Today Interiors, some of the fabrics almost have a 3D effect which are beautifully unique. The collection includes rippling water in shimmering gold and silver thread on a watermarked background together with sculptured velvet’s to combine high performance with a stylish look.

A really stand out piece is the orbit/lunar fabric from the Today Interiors Callisto range, its bold, quirky and a real statement piece, not to mention the fabric has a luxurious feel. All of the

Callisto collection is suitable for upholstery, curtains and soft furnishings in a domestic and contract situation.

Another beautiful collection which is slightly more subtle is the Remanence collection by Casamance. Floral, animal and mineral prints cover the fabric with depth, there is also a beautiful rippled velvet that comes in a variety of colour ways.

The fabrics work beautifully on footstools and poufs, they can add depth and texture to accent home decor pieces. In particular the

Parmelia is a lichen which forms on the bark of trees.

Woven using fancy yarns, this matte fabric resembles wool and has a very pronounced texture like plant tissue and works beautifully well upholstered onto a footstool, which can be seen in this image.

Embroidered upholstery fabrics are especially effective for accent pieces.  For example, use an embroidered fabric to upholster a bedroom chair, vanity stool, or bench.  An embroidered fabric makes very attractive window seat cushions and pillows and can also be effective as the cover for a piano or organ bench. Different fabrics associate themselves with different feelings. They can blend into the surrounding or accent your furniture.

It seems that velvet upholstery never seems to go out of fashion. Every season there is a new innovative way velvet has been revamped to fit into our everyday lives. Whether through stitching techniques or embossing, velvet has may ways in which it can transform our spaces. The ruched fabric pictured above would work well on cushions and even chairs. The soft colours ooze luxury and sophistication.

If you are planning to upholster something that will experience everyday wear and tear, durability is important to consider. Upholstery fabric’s durability is determined by how it rates on the manufacturer-administered double rub test, which is a back and forth motion that mimics the wear and tear of someone sitting on an upholstered seat over time. The higher the number of double rubs, (for example 100,000 vs 10,000) the better the indicator of quality and durability. We understand that choosing the right fabric for you is an important process, If you would like to find out more information about our fabrics we have to offer please do drop us a call with any questions you may have and we would be more than happy to chat through all of our beautiful collections we have to offer.
